Battery Separator Materials India: Strengthening Supply Chains
Battery separator materials are a critical component of the battery supply chain, and India is taking significant steps to reduce its dependence on imports. Separators play a crucial role in preventing electrical contact between the cathode and anode while allowing ion movement. The upcoming ₹12,000 crore incentive scheme includes support for copper foil separator manufacturing, a segment where India currently has zero domestic production .

Advanced separator technology development is also a focus area in India. Research at IIT Kharagpur is developing all-solid polymer electrolyte membranes for Li-ion and Li-metal batteries, with the aim to create chemically, thermally, mechanically, and dimensionally stable polymer electrolyte membranes with high Li-ion conductivity . Researchers at IIT Indore have also fabricated advanced nanofiber separators for sodium-ion batteries using coaxial electrospinning, demonstrating high mechanical strength (24 MPa), high thermal stability (170°C), high porosity (74%), and electrolyte uptake (325%) . India's push for localisation extends to copper foil, as Chinese companies currently own as much as 80% of the copper foil capacity globally, followed by Korean manufacturers who command 20% of the production . By 2035, India aims to achieve significant domestic capacity for separator materials, enhancing supply chain resilience and supporting the growing battery ecosystem.
