From there, a modernization strategy is chosen from a spectrum of options. These can range from a low-risk "Re-host" (or lift-and-shift), where the application is moved to a cloud environment with minimal changes, to a more involved "Re-platform," where the application is modified to take better advantage of a new platform. The most transformative, and most complex, options are "Re-factor," which involves breaking down the monolithic application into modern microservices, and "Replace," where the legacy application is decommissioned entirely in favor of a new SaaS or custom-built solution.
