Meltblown Nonwoven Fibers: The Critical Layer for Filtration and Fluid Management
Meltblown nonwoven fibers are a critical, high-value component in many hygiene products, prized for their exceptional ability to create fine, micro-denier webs. The meltblown process involves extruding a polymer melt through fine orifices into converging, high-velocity air streams, which attenuates the filaments into extremely fine fibers and creates a web with a very high surface area and small pore size .
This unique structure gives meltblown nonwovens their key properties. They are highly effective as a fluid barrier while remaining breathable, making them ideal for the core wrap in diapers and the leg gather cuffs that prevent leaks . The material’s fine fiber structure also acts as a filtration layer. However, because meltblown fabrics lack the strength of spunbond, they are almost always used in combination with spunbond layers, most commonly as part of a Spunbond-Meltblown-Spunbond (SMS) laminate.
The demand for meltblown is linked to the production of high-performance hygiene products. While the market stabilized after the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a strong focus on developing more sustainable versions of this technology, including bio-based meltblown materials.
